The hull design is based on a Tucker 43 expanded to 47' LOD.The hull, deck and superstructure are all steel, and the welding was performed by certified welders.Professional architects, engineers and trades people were consulted during all phases of construction, and Lloyd's and ABYS standards were observed.In order to improve on systems that are common on pleasure boats but subject to excessive wear, damage or failure, the following areas were addressed:Thru hull fittingsThere are no thru hull fittings. Sea water is brought into the boat through the top of a standpipe that extends above the waterline. If a valve or hose failed, no water would enter the boat. The sea water is used only for exhaust cooling. The exhaust is stainless steel with rubber couplings and can run without water if necessary.Keel CoolerThe engine does not take in seawater for cooling. There are pipes enclosed by removable plates in the keel that contain an antifreeze mixture. This is circulated through the engine heat exchanger and provides enough capacity to cool the engine even when it is running out of the water. A slot in the bottom of the 3/4" keel plate allows for seawater circulation and provides a safe place for dual depth sounder transducers.SteeringThere are two hydraulic variable output helm pumps, one in the pilothouse and one in a pedestal on the aft deck. They work independently and are joined at a manifold that leads to twin hydraulic cylinders attached to the steering quadrant. A combination of valves allows any component to be isolated and the steering will still function.The rudder shaft log extends above the waterline and would not be a problem even if the internal seal failed. The balanced rudder is massively constructed and fully protected by the keel.Shaft bearings and sealsThere are no conventional cutlass bearings and packing glands. Custom bronze bearings and lip type seals are used on both ends of the shaft log, which is filled with waterproof grease. There are no water leaks or noticeable wear with this system.Thrust BearingsA custom designed 1800# thrust bearing assembly transfers the for and aft thrust to the hull. The engine is rigidly mounted to the engine bed and is isolated electrically and from vibrations to the hull. A short driveshaft with universal joints connects the transmission to the propeller shaft. No thrust is transferred to the transmission or engine bed.Junk Sails and RiggingThe Junk rig was chosen for ease of sailing, durability and maintenance. The fore and main masts are 10" dia. aluminum extrusions, mounted inside steel pipes that are welded to the deck and keel. They are clamped by bolts at the bottom and wedges at deck level. They are not stayed, leaving the deck unobstructed, are sealed at both ends, and contain no electrical wires. The aluminum mizzen mast is stayed and contains wiring for anchor and strobe lights and an antenna for the Short Wave/SSB radio.The sails are balanced with 25% forward of the mast and have 6 panels individually battened and controlled by a continuous sheet. These sheets terminate at the back of the pilothouse and can be adjusted without going forward. The risers were replaced recently. Compression is 150 PSI+ in each cylinder, and the motor runs sweet as a nut. The engine is not original to the boat as the boat was manufactured in 1991 and the engine is a 92, so the total hours on the engine may be less than those shown on the hour meter. The boat most likely had a 350 in it when it was manufactured. The Bravo 1 drive dates from 1998 and was rebuilt in 2016, and had a new gimbal bearing and oil seal and new u-joints on the drive shaft in July of this year.The boat has a 16 gallon water tank (that will need flushing), a 10 gallon holding tank for the toilet with pump-out or overboard discharge via a new (2018) y-valve, and a 97 gallon fuel tank.The boat has 2 sets of batteries, a house battery and a starting battery that are connected to a Perko battery selector switch. A battery charger keeps both battery banks charged when the shore power is connected, and the solar charger keeps the starting battery charged.Outside, the canvas was replaced by the previous owner in the last couple of years and is in great condition. There is a Bimini top, side screens and rear drop screens to fully enclose the helm. There are ample fenders and lines with the boat, a newer anchor. 10 - 15deg of chain and 100 - 150deg of rope. The boat is in superb condition. There are some spider cracks in places in the gel coat. and evidence of use elsewhere. as would be expected from a 30-year-old boat. Otherwise, it is in amazing condition. The cabin looks like it is in a boat a fraction of the age and shows minimal use. The original seat covers, and seat foam are in amazing condition considering their age.There is a dinette that converts to a v-berth, a small galley with a sink and a propane stove, and a 120-volt/12-volt AC/DC fridge. There is a bathroom with a small sink and a Jabsco pump out head with a holding tank or overboard discharge. There are lots of storage compartments and under seat lockers throughout the boat. There are also various cushions for seating out in the cockpit.The trailer is in great condition, however it will need to be registered. I ran the boat last summer in St. Margaret's Bay and I have to say it is the best riding boat I have ever owned. She cruises at around 32 Mph and hits 45 Mph flat out when properly trimmed. This particular design was for the Wheeler Shipbuilding Company and meant to be used by owner, friends and hired hand for offshore sword fishing. A complete set of plans was obtained from the Hart Nautical Museum of MIT and rights to produce one vessel to these plans were negotiated. The original drawings were followed as closely as possible (re; lines and scantlings) but as opposed to traditional plank on frame construction, modern cold-molded strip-planking materials and techniques were used throughout the hull construction and the interior layout was changed to reflect CHANTEY II's use as a comfortable long range cruising vessel. CHANTEY II's owners stepped aboard for the first time in 1989. Since then they have cruised extensively all along the US Eastern seaboard, The Canadian Maritimes and The Great Lakes with winters spent in the Bahamas and Florida's East Coast.
